How to identify
The Yellow scale (Aonidiella citrina) belongs to the Diaspididae family and the order Hemiptera. It is a dangerous quarantine pest that lives a hidden life cycle beneath a dense, protective shield.
Adult females have a round, slightly convex shield, yellow or golden-brown in color. The insect's body remains protected by this wax formation, making it difficult to detect upon initial inspection.
Males are significantly smaller than females, possess wings, and are capable of active flight to find mates, although their life cycle is extremely short and dedicated solely to reproduction.
First-instar nymphs, known as "crawlers," are mobile and have a pale yellow coloration. This is the stage during which the pest disperses throughout the tree canopy and to neighboring plants.
After settling on a plant, the nymph begins to secrete wax filaments, forming the primary shield under which it will feed for the remainder of its life.
What it damages
The primary hosts of this pest are citrus crops: lemons, oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits. The scale is also capable of infesting other evergreen plants in tropical and subtropical regions.
The insect feeds on leaves, young shoots, and fruits. In cases of high infestation, the pest may colonize even tree trunks, extracting cell sap from the plant tissues.
Damaged fruits lose their commercial value due to the formation of yellow or chlorotic spots at the puncture sites. In severe cases, fruit may deform or fall prematurely.
The foliage also suffers significantly, leading to yellowing and premature leaf drop. This causes overall tree weakening and reduces its productivity in subsequent seasons.
Systematic infestation leads to the dieback of shoot tips and general decline of the canopy, which in neglected orchards can result in the death of individual trees.
When it appears
The activity of the pest is closely linked to temperature patterns. Moderately warm and humid conditions, typical of subtropical climates, are optimal for its development.
In a single calendar year, under favorable conditions, the scale can produce multiple generations, ensuring rapid population growth if not properly managed.
The dispersal of "crawlers" is most intense during periods of active sap flow and shoot growth in citrus trees, when the plant is most vulnerable to parasitic feeding.
The pest survives the winter season in the nymph or adult female stage under shields on the bark or leaves that remain on the tree throughout the winter.
The rate of development for each generation depends on the sum of active temperatures; therefore, in greenhouse conditions, the pest is capable of year-round reproduction.
Signs of infestation
The first visual sign is the presence of small yellow dot-like spots on leaves and fruit surfaces, which gradually increase in size over time.
On the underside of leaves, one can notice numerous small, flat, scale-like structures. They adhere tightly to the surface and are difficult to scrape off.
When inspecting fruit, bright yellow halos around each site of scale localization are highly visible. This is a result of plant tissue reaction to the pest's salivary toxins.
The presence of sticky honeydew or developing sooty mold, which often thrives on scale secretions, serves as an indirect indicator of heavy pest infestation.
Severe infestations are accompanied by massive leaf yellowing and dropping, which is clearly noticeable against the background of healthy neighboring orchard areas.
Control measures
Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence periods, as they are most sensitive to treatments at this stage.
An essential management practice includes sanitary pruning of infested shoots and timely removal of affected fruit to reduce the overall inoculum pressure in the orchard.
Biological control relies on the use of natural enemies—specialized parasitoid wasps and predatory beetles that effectively keep scale populations in check.
Applying mineral oil-based emulsions can disrupt the pest's respiratory processes beneath the shield, often serving as a more environmentally friendly solution for home collections.
