Strawberry synchytrium (Synchytrium fragariae) is an intracellular pathogen belonging to the Chytridiomycota phylum. It is a microscopic, obligate fungal parasite that thrives by infecting the host plant's cells.

Systematically, it falls within the Synchytrium genus. The pathogen is characterized by the production of resting cysts, which enable it to persist in the soil and environmental debris for several years.

The life cycle involves the release of motile zoospores that require a film of water to navigate to the host. Once they reach the plant, they penetrate the epidermal cells, triggering the formation of galls.

This pathogen is highly dependent on humidity. Free water on the surface of plant parts is essential for the germination of zoospores and the initiation of the infection process.

As a specialized parasite, Synchytrium fragariae primarily targets species within the Fragaria genus, making it a persistent threat in regions where wild and cultivated strawberries coexist.

What it damages

The disease primarily affects cultivated strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa) and various wild strawberry species. The infection leads to the development of pathological outgrowths, commonly known as galls.

The pathogen targets the aerial parts, specifically petioles, runners, and inflorescences. This interference disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, severely weakening the affected plant.

Severe infestations result in stunted growth and a significant reduction in fruit yield. The plant diverts its energy to form the galls rather than producing high-quality berries.

The structural damage caused by the gall formation makes the plants more susceptible to environmental stressors, such as frost or drought, as the vascular integrity is compromised.

In commercial operations, the presence of this disease can lead to the total loss of the crop and the requirement to quarantine the affected area for several years.

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive symptom is the appearance of small, wart-like galls on the petioles, stems, and runners. These structures are often the first visible signs of an active infection.

Initially, these galls may match the color of the host tissue but often darken to a tan or brown color as they mature. Their size can vary from microscopic to several millimeters in diameter.

Leaves on infected petioles may show signs of yellowing or curling, as the normal metabolic functions of the plant are disrupted by the excessive proliferation of the gall tissue.

Inflorescences often exhibit extreme deformity. Flowers may fail to open or produce malformed fruits, leading to a direct economic impact on the harvest.

Unlike other fungal spots, synchytrium galls are characterized by hypertrophy, meaning the tissue itself is enlarged and distorted rather than necrotic or withered from the start.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most critical control measure. Growers must use certified disease-free nursery stock to prevent the introduction of the pathogen into new, clean planting sites.

Crop rotation is essential for managing the soil-borne nature of Synchytrium fragariae. A period of at least 4 to 5 years without strawberry cultivation is recommended to ensure resting cysts lose viability.

Once identified, infected plants should be carefully removed, including their root systems and a portion of the surrounding soil, and immediately destroyed by burning or deep burial.

Managing water levels in the field is vital. Improving soil drainage and ensuring adequate spacing between plants to encourage airflow can reduce the humidity levels that favor zoospore activity.

Currently, there are no highly effective chemical fungicides specifically labeled for the complete eradication of strawberry synchytrium. Therefore, prevention through strict phytosanitary practices remains the primary defense strategy.
