The fungus is categorized within the kingdom Fungi. It has evolved specific mechanisms to attach to and penetrate the tissues of host plants, particularly focusing on legumes during their active growth phase.
What it damages
This pathogen specifically targets soybean crops (Glycine max). The disease manifests primarily on foliage and stems, leading to necrotic spots and weakening the plant structure.
The economic impact is characterized by reduced photosynthesis and nutrient transport. Infected plants often show decreased pod filling, which significantly lowers overall seed yield and quality.
When it appears
The infection cycle is highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. The disease is most prevalent during summer months when high moisture levels allow spores to germinate and spread effectively.
The fungus survives the winter on infested crop debris left in the field. As temperatures rise in the spring, the pycnidia release spores that initiate the new infection cycle on emerging seedlings.
Signs of infestation
Symptoms initially appear as small brown or dark necrotic lesions on the leaves. Over time, these spots can enlarge and merge, causing significant leaf tissue death.

In cases of high infection pressure, foliar fungicide applications are required during the R1-R3 growth stages. Regular field scouting is essential to identify early symptoms and apply treatments in a timely manner.
