Pestalotia palmarum is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is a well-known pathogen that specifically targets various species of palm trees, particularly in nursery and tropical settings.
The fungus reproduces via conidia, which are produced in specialized structures called acervuli. These spores are spindle-shaped, multicellular, and typically feature hair-like appendages at their ends, facilitating wind and waterborne dispersal.
This pathogen acts as an opportunistic parasite, frequently attacking plant tissues that are stressed by unfavorable environmental conditions, nutritional deficiencies, or physical injuries. It enters the leaf surface through stomata or wounds.
Taxonomically, this species is related to the group of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycetes) known for causing various foliar spots. It thrives in humid conditions, which are ideal for its mycelial growth and sporulation.
Agronomists identify the pathogen through microscopic examination of the acervuli found on necrotic tissue. The distinct morphology of the conidia allows for accurate confirmation of Pestalotia palmarum infection.
What it damages
