Pepper huasteco virus (PHV) is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family and the Begomovirus genus. It contains a single-stranded DNA genome wrapped in geminate (twinned) particles.

The virus is exclusively transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative, non-propagative manner. It does not survive on its own in the environment and depends entirely on the vector for dispersal.

The pathogen is highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, where host plants and whitefly populations are abundant throughout the year.

It cannot be transmitted through mechanical wounding or seed contact, making vector management the primary focus for any containment strategy.

Molecular detection techniques, such as PCR, are required for accurate identification because symptoms can often be misdiagnosed as nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress.
