Its life cycle includes the production of pycnidia, which release conidia. These spores are primary inoculum sources, capable of spreading through wind and rainfall to infect fresh pruning wounds or natural openings in the grapevine bark.
Taxonomically, it is closely related to other species within the Neofusicoccum genus. Genetic variability within this species contributes to its adaptability across different viticultural regions, making it a persistent threat to vineyards.
