Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus and the family Potyviridae, known for affecting corn and sorghum crops worldwide.
The virus is characterized by its non-persistent transmission mechanism, primarily involving various aphid species such as the corn leaf aphid, which carry the virus from infected to healthy plants.
It acts as a systemic pathogen, meaning that once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the vascular system to all parts of the organism, causing irreversible damage.
The persistence of the virus in the environment is supported by perennial grass hosts, which act as winter reservoirs, ensuring the pathogen survives until the next planting season.
The virus thrives under moderate climate conditions, which promote both the multiplication of the virus within host plants and the activity of insect vectors.
What it damages
The damage caused by MDMV includes severe stunting of plant growth, leading to reduced height and significantly smaller leaves compared to healthy corn plants.
