Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Tymoviridae family and the Maculavirus genus. It is a spherical virus containing a single-stranded RNA genome.
The virus is considered a latent pathogen, meaning it can colonize its host without immediately causing distinct symptoms, often leading to hidden spreading in vineyards.
Taxonomically, it is categorized as a virus affecting vascular tissues. It does not spread through seeds or soil, restricting its primary transmission to vegetative propagation.
The virus is highly stable within the xylem and phloem vessels, which allows it to persist throughout the entire lifespan of the grapevine host.
Since natural vectors like insects have not been identified for transmission in field conditions, the primary route of spread is human-mediated through grafting and propagation.
What it damages
GFkV primarily infects Vitis vinifera cultivars and various American rootstock species used in modern commercial viticulture.
The pathogenic impact involves metabolic disturbances that reduce vegetative vigor, cluster size, and overall berry ripening potential of the vine.
In grafted vines, the presence of the virus can cause graft incompatibility, especially when the scion and rootstock have different sensitivities to the pathogen.
Chronic infection results in a steady decline in the vineyard's productivity, making the plantation less economically viable over time.
Infected vines exhibit reduced tolerance to environmental stresses, including water scarcity, extreme heat, and winter frost damage.
Signs of infestation
The classic symptom is the appearance of small, translucent spots (flecks) along the veins of leaves, which are most visible on young, actively growing shoots.
Infected leaves may also show mild leaf curling, distortion, or asymmetric growth compared to healthy leaves on the same shoot.
On specific rootstock varieties like Vitis rupestris, the virus can induce severe leaf epinasty and vascular necrosis, serving as a biological indicator.
Symptoms are typically transient and most prominent during the spring flush, often disappearing or becoming masked as the summer season progresses.
Despite the lack of persistent visual markers, the viral titer remains high in all vine tissues throughout the growing season.
Control measures
Management relies on the use of certified, virus-free planting material derived from thermotherapy or meristem-tip culture propagation techniques.
Rigorous sanitation protocols must be maintained during pruning and grafting activities to prevent any potential mechanical transmission between vines.
Regular diagnostic screening of mother vineyards using ELISA or PCR techniques is critical to ensure that propagating wood is free from GFkV.
There are no direct chemical treatments available for virus-infected vines, making prevention the only effective strategy for disease management.
