The biology of D. gigantea relies heavily on warm temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Prolonged leaf wetness caused by dew or frequent precipitation is essential for the germination of spores and subsequent colonization of host tissues.

As a pathogen, it demonstrates high variability and adaptive capacity. It can infect plants throughout their vegetative development, often becoming more severe as the canopy closes and humidity levels within the crop stand increase.

The impact of this disease on agriculture is significant due to the loss of photosynthetic tissue. Reduced nutrient synthesis in the leaves directly leads to stunted plant growth, decreased yield, and lower quality of harvested seeds or fodder.

This fungus primarily attacks various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and millet. It is also highly prevalent in various grasses used for pastures and lawns, where it causes necrotic lesions that diminish the aesthetic and nutritional value of the turf.

Under humid conditions, a characteristic olive-gray fungal mat develops on the surface of the lesions. This mat consists of abundant conidiophores and conidia. Severe infections result in the coalescence of spots, leading to massive leaf blight and necrosis.

Effective management begins with cultural practices such as crop rotation and the thorough incorporation of crop residues into the soil. Ensuring proper air circulation within the canopy helps to reduce humidity and limits the pathogen's ability to thrive.
