Dichotomophthora is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Deuteromycetes. The most prominent species in this genus is Dichotomophthora portulacae.

This fungal pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily infecting plants belonging to the Portulacaceae family. It is recognized as a significant constraint in certain agricultural contexts.

The organism is characterized by its distinct mycelial structure. The name of the genus itself refers to the dichotomous, or Y-shaped, branching patterns observed in its conidiophores.

The fungi survive in the soil and on plant debris as mycelium and conidia, which serve as the primary sources of inoculum for future infections in the next growing season.

Laboratory identification of this pathogen is primarily conducted through microscopic examination of conidia and branching patterns, which are unique to this specific group of fungi.

What it damages

The primary target of Dichotomophthora is Portulaca oleracea (purslane). It causes significant necrotic lesions on foliage and stems, impairing the plant's physiological functions.
