Tomato Tourmaline

Working with the Turmalin tomato

Working with determinate varieties from Gavrish, Turmalin stands out as a reliable workhorse for those who value yield consistency. When transplanting seedlings, it is important to note its compact size: the plant does not require excessive pruning or complex formation, which simplifies maintenance during the peak of the season. The claimed 95–98 days from germination to harvest is a realistic timeframe for producing marketable produce with standard irrigation and fertilization.

Stress and Disease Resistance

In open fields or plastic tunnels, the main advantage of this tomato is its natural immunity. Turmalin requires minimal intervention regarding crop protection: its resistance to alternaria, TMV, fusarium wilt, and cladosporium significantly reduces the need for chemical treatments. This effectively lowers production costs and simplifies daily agronomic management.

Yield and Logistics

The flat-round pink fruits, weighing 140–180 grams, are the ideal size for retail and farmers' markets. The primary benefit for a grower is its excellent transportability. These tomatoes are firm and do not bruise or leak during transit, a rare trait for pink-fruited varieties. They maintain their shape well and are resistant to cracking during minor fluctuations in soil moisture. In practice, this translates to fewer losses during harvest and delivery to the end consumer.
