Originator:
Institute of Plant Production named after V. Ya. Yuryev, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. Registered in the Ukrainian Plant Variety Register since 2005 for Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones.
Trial characteristics: Variety — striped. Plant height 160-175 cm. Large heads, diameter 18-23 cm. Husking 20-22%, shelliness 99.7%. 1000 seed mass 51.6-52 g.
Biological features: Hybrid belongs to the early-maturing group, vegetation period duration 107-109 days, characterized by uniform flowering and maturation. High drought resistance, weak shattering during standstill, resistant to lodging. Genetically determined resistance to wolf and false powdery mildew, tolerant to gray and white rot. Hybrid for oilseed use.
Yield and quality: In competitive trials of the institute in 2000-2002, seed yield was 38.7-41.4 centners per hectare, exceeding the standard Odessa 249 by 4.8 centners per hectare. According to variety trials at Vasilkovskaya DSCS in 2003-2003, the hybrid provided an average seed yield of 27.4 centners per hectare. Oil content in seeds 49.8%. A distinguishing feature of the hybrid is high oleic acid content 67.3-75.9%, which is advantageous for use in food, confectionery, and pharmaceutical industries. Mother line yield 22.7-25 centners per hectare. Percentage of conditioned seeds 65-70%. Due to the use of high-yielding simple hybrid as the maternal parent, production of three-line hybrid seeds is cheaper and more profitable than simple interline hybrids. For complete pollination, parental lines must be sown in two rows on hybridization plots. The maternal line should be sown only after the emergence of cotyledons of the paternal line, which is sown once separately, and during sowing of the maternal line, 1-2 additional rows of the paternal line should be sown for better pollination.
