A Breeding Breakthrough for Arid Lands

The wildrye (Psathyrostachys juncea) variety 'Krasen Stepu' is the result of long-term research by the Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. Registered in 2020, this variety was developed as a direct response to global climate change, providing farmers with a robust tool for cultivating degraded and arid lands. Unlike many introduced species, 'Krasen Stepu' is specifically adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of Ukraine, as evidenced by its regionalization across all three key zones: the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya.

Biological Features and Morphology

This perennial grass variety is characterized by high growth energy and significant vegetative mass. Key morphological traits include:

• Pubescent upper internodes and a hairy rachis surface, serving as a protective mechanism against moisture evaporation.
• Long, linear basal leaves with moderate roughness, ensuring efficient photosynthesis.
• A long spike with a high number of spikelets, which directly impacts seed productivity.
• Early flowering, allowing the plant to maximize the use of spring soil moisture reserves before peak summer temperatures arrive.

Practical Application in Agribusiness

The primary purpose of 'Krasen Stepu' is the establishment of highly productive hayfields and pastures. Its uniqueness lies in the combination of high drought tolerance and salt tolerance. This makes the variety indispensable for the reclamation of saline lands and for improving forage bases in regions with extreme weather conditions. Within the forage production structure, this wildrye occupies a niche as a crop capable of providing stable green mass yields in areas where traditional grasses wither or fail to withstand soil salinity.
