Mechanism of weed control in corn crops

"Milagro 040 SC" is a systemic post-emergence herbicide based on nicosulfuron (40 g/l). Unlike contact-acting products, this solution inhibits the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target weeds. This process blocks the biosynthesis of vital amino acids, leading to an immediate halt in plant growth within hours of application.

Why this matters for agronomic practice

• Systemic activity: The active ingredient is rapidly absorbed through the leaf surface and translocated throughout the plant's vascular system, ensuring full coverage even in hard-to-reach growth points.
• Selectivity: The herbicide is specifically designed for corn. Due to the crop's unique metabolic pathway, nicosulfuron is effectively deactivated within the plant, minimizing phytotoxicity when the recommended rate of 1–1.25 L/ha is applied.
• Spectrum of activity: Milagro is highly effective against both annual and perennial grasses (such as quackgrass, barnyard grass) and a wide range of broadleaf weeds, including common ragweed and redroot pigweed.

Application insights

The product is formulated as a suspension concentrate, which simplifies the creation of a stable spray solution. For best results, application should coincide with the 3–10 leaf stage of the corn crop. A single treatment per season is sufficient to clear the field of competition for moisture and nutrients. Classified as a Hazard Class 3 agent, operators must use standard personal protective equipment and strictly adhere to environmental safety regulations during handling and spraying.
