Maize RVL 173 X LIMLAV 88

Limagrain genetic strategy: The case of RVL 173 X LIMLAV 88

French breeding house Limagrain has spent decades focusing on hybrids designed to mitigate climatic risks. The RVL 173 X LIMLAV 88 is a mid-early maize hybrid that balances vegetative biomass with high-quality grain filling. The originators' engineering approach aimed at developing a stable product suited for intensive livestock farming and the processing industry.

Agrotechnical features and technical potential

• Vegetation period: The mid-early maturity type allows the hybrid to effectively utilize soil moisture in the first half of the season, avoiding critical temperature spikes during grain fill.
• Grain morphology: The yellow-orange color indicates a high concentration of carotenoids, which is a critical factor for the energy value of animal feed.
• Use cases: The hybrid is optimized for two primary tasks: high-nutritive feed production and advanced industrial processing.

The technical value of this hybrid lies in its adaptability to diverse soil and climatic conditions. Limagrain’s selection of a mid-early maturity group ensures predictable harvesting windows, which reduces machinery pressure during peak periods. The grain possesses the necessary physical and chemical properties for stable storage, while its biochemical composition meets modern requirements for fodder grain, where nutrient digestibility is just as important as total yield.
