Barley Taina

Technical Potential of 'Taina' Barley

'Taina' spring barley is the result of long-term breeding efforts by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (PBGI). This variety is designed to produce stable yields under typical Ukrainian climatic conditions, where adaptability to vegetative stress is the key factor for success.

Agronomic Characteristics and Morphology

• Tillering type: Semi-erectoid, ensuring optimal leaf canopy light penetration and efficient photosynthesis.
• Biological resistance: The variety demonstrates a high genetic potential for lodging resistance, which is critical for intensive farming systems using mineral fertilizers.
• Pathogen resistance: Breeding was conducted with current phytosanitary conditions in Ukrainian fields in mind, providing tolerance against the most common types of smut and powdery mildew.

Practical Application and Cultivation

'Taina' is positioned as an intensive-type variety. Its primary technological feature is high responsiveness to high-input agricultural environments. When nitrogen fertilization and fungicide protection protocols are followed, the crop forms large, well-filled grain with high hectoliter weight. Optimal sowing dates allow for efficient utilization of spring moisture reserves, minimizing the risk of critical growth stages being exposed to summer droughts.

For the farmer, this translates into a predictable result: the variety avoids "surprises" such as sharp drops in thousand-kernel weight during temperature fluctuations. It serves as a reliable tool for operations focused on producing quality commercial grain with strong feed or malting characteristics, depending on the specific annual conditions.
