Beekeeping in Moldova: Poor Harvest, Low Prices, and Export Pressure

Beekeepers, processors, and government representatives gathered in Costești, Ialoveni district, to discuss the challenges facing the beekeeping sector, honey traceability, and strengthening Moldovan products on foreign markets. The meeting, held on October 23 and organized by 'Regina Naturii SRL', coincided with the visit of APIMONDIA President Peter Kozmus. Participants focused on improving sector organization, maintaining quality standards, and finding ways to boost profitability amidst difficult market conditions.

The beekeeping sector in the Republic of Moldova faced a challenging year that heavily impacted trading relations: honey production suffered from adverse weather conditions, while export volumes remained consistently high. Under these circumstances, the sustainable development of beekeeping relies not only on production capacities but also on proper sector organization, strict adherence to quality requirements, and strategic solutions to increase overall profitability.

According to preliminary estimates presented during the discussions, the Republic of Moldova produced approximately 2,500 tonnes of honey, whereas export volumes exceeded 4,500 tonnes. This substantial gap was largely covered by drawing from accumulated stocks and reserves gathered in previous years. Such a discrepancy highlights the heavy reliance on carry-over inventory to fulfill external market demands.

Among the primary factors negatively impacting the honey harvest were severe spring frosts and a prolonged summer drought. These adverse weather phenomena critically impaired the development of nectar-producing plants, limiting the foraging opportunities for bees and severely restricting the harvest volumes available to local apiarists.

The current situation underscores the urgent need for systematic support and better market organization. Low domestic prices coupled with intense export pressures threaten the economic viability of local producers. Meeting participants agreed that enhancing traceability, ensuring high quality standards, and actively promoting Moldovan honey internationally are essential steps to secure the future of the industry.
