Queensland cattle farmer sentenced to 40 years for murder of neighbors in livestock dispute

The Queensland Supreme Court, sitting in Townsville, has sentenced 63-year-old cattle farmer Darryl Valroy Young to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 40 years. The sentencing follows a trial where Young was found guilty of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, stemming from a horrific mass shooting on his remote property.

The incident took place on August 4, 2022, at Young's cattle station in Bogie, southwest of Townsville. The victims, Mervyn Schwarz, his wife Maree, and her son Graham Tighe, were shot dead at the gate to the property. The court heard that the violence erupted due to a long-standing dispute, with Young operating under the belief that the neighboring family had been stealing his livestock.

Justice Christopher Johnstone, in delivering the sentence, described Young's actions as 'heinous' and representing the worst kind of offending. Justice Johnstone noted that Young opened fire on the family with a rifle in a manner akin to 'killing feral animals on your property.' This chilling assessment highlighted the extreme cold-bloodedness displayed during the attack on the neighboring family members.

In addition to the three fatalities, Young also attempted to kill Graham Tighe's brother, Ross Tighe. Ross sustained a gunshot wound to his lower torso but managed to flee the scene. He was subsequently transported to the Mackay Base Hospital, where he underwent life-saving emergency surgery. Graham Tighe, one of the murder victims, leaves behind a young family.

The case has sent shockwaves through the Australian agricultural community, illustrating the tragic consequences of escalating property and livestock disputes. The substantial sentence handed down by the court serves as a firm judicial stance against the use of lethal force as a means of settling disagreements over agricultural assets and land ownership.
