The virus consists of small icosahedral particles containing single-stranded RNA. Due to its narrow host range, it is primarily problematic in horticultural settings where cyclamens are grown as ornamental plants.

Transmission occurs predominantly through mechanical means, such as handling, pruning, or potting, where the virus is transferred via plant sap through micro-wounds. Aphids can also act as insect vectors, spreading the virus between plants in a greenhouse environment.

The virus is notably stable in plant sap, meaning it can persist on gardening tools, pots, and surfaces for extended periods. This persistence makes it a significant threat in intensive floricultural production facilities.

Since the virus resides in the tubers of infected plants, it can easily survive between growing seasons. This biological characteristic makes it difficult to eradicate once a batch of stock plants becomes contaminated.

The first signs of infection typically appear as a mosaic-like pattern on young leaves, consisting of irregular chlorotic or pale spots that contrast with the darker green tissue of healthy leaves.

As the infection progresses, leaves may exhibit distortion, including crinkling, curling, or uneven margins. The plant often appears stunted, and these symptoms are frequently misidentified as nutrient deficiencies.

Infected plants show poor flower development, with smaller blooms, loss of color intensity, or the appearance of non-characteristic streaks and spots on the petals, which severely reduces their market value.

Severe infestations often lead to premature yellowing and leaf drop, resulting in a sparse and unattractive plant. The overall vigor of the cyclamen declines rapidly once the virus becomes systemic.

Management of insect populations is critical. Implementing a robust integrated pest management (IPM) program to control aphids and thrips significantly reduces the risk of insect-mediated viral transmission.

Early detection and destruction of infected plants are vital. Any plant displaying suspected symptoms should be immediately isolated and destroyed off-site to stop the spread of the virus to healthy crops.
