The virus contains a single-stranded circular DNA genome and is strictly restricted to the phloem tissue of the host plant, disrupting normal plant growth and nutrient distribution.

It is transmitted primarily by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa, which acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding.

The virus cannot be transmitted mechanically through pruning tools or physical contact, making the insect vector the primary driver of disease spread in the field.
