The viral agent exists as a double-stranded circular DNA virus. It can integrate into the host genome or persist in an episomal state, making it a complex challenge for plant pathology.

Transmission occurs almost exclusively through grafting. The use of infected mother vines for propagation ensures that the virus spreads into new vineyards and nurseries.
