Trochila is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Trochila genus. These fungi belong to the Ascomycota phylum and are known for parasitizing the leaves of various plants, often appearing in woodlands and ornamental landscapes.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to decaying leaf litter. During the winter, the fungus survives in fallen leaves, developing fruiting bodies called apothecia. In spring, these structures release spores that spread through wind and rain splashes.
Once the spores land on healthy leaf tissue, they germinate and penetrate the epidermis. The fungal mycelium then spreads throughout the leaf tissue, absorbing nutrients and causing damage to the cellular structure.
This parasite is highly specific to its host plant, often targeting particular species. The infection disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, particularly photosynthesis, due to the destruction of healthy leaf cells.
The fungus continues to colonize the leaves even after they have fallen to the ground, allowing it to complete its life cycle and prepare for the next season's infection cycle.
The most prominent symptom of Trochila infection is the appearance of distinct spots on the leaves. These spots are usually circular or irregular in shape and often constrained by the leaf veins.
