The first symptoms of the disease appear on leaves as circular or irregular spots, which have a brown or dark-brown color. Over time, the center of the spot may lighten, becoming grayish-beige, while a distinct dark or purple border often forms around the lesion.

On the affected parts of the leaf blade, mainly on the upper side, small black dots called pycnidia are formed. These are the fruiting bodies of the pathogen, which contain spores that spread the infection further throughout the plant.

With massive development of the disease, spots can merge, covering a significant area of the leaf, which leads to premature yellowing and drying of the foliage. In severe cases, deformation and curling of the leaves are observed.

Fallen infected leaves become the main source of the pathogen, surviving throughout the winter. Externally, the shrub loses its decorative appeal, looks depressed, and under heavy infection, premature defoliation occurs.

A distinctive feature of phyllosticta is the formation of black pycnidia visible to the naked eye within the spots. This allows for visual diagnosis of the disease in the field without the need for complex laboratory tests.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Phyllosticta spinarum (sometimes referred to as Phyllosticta berberidis), which belongs to the group of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycetes).

The fungus leads a parasitic lifestyle, feeding on host plant tissues, which causes the death of the affected areas. The mycelium of the pathogen develops inside the leaf tissues, gradually destroying their structure and reducing the plant's photosynthetic activity.

In the life cycle of the fungus, pycnidia play an important role, representing spherical structures. Inside them, a huge number of conidia are produced—spores of asexual reproduction that spread via raindrops or wind gusts.

The development of the pathogen occurs mainly in the summer period, starting from the moment of bud break. The fungus adapts quickly to its environment, using weakened plants for colonization.

The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and spores in fallen leaves and on infected branches of the barberry. With the onset of favorable spring temperatures, primary infection of young leaves begins.

High air humidity and abundant rainfall during the summer period favor the development of phyllosticta. Moisture is a necessary condition for the germination of spores and the penetration of the pathogen into healthy plant tissues.

A temperature range from +18°C to +25°C is optimal for the rapid spread of fungal spores. During these periods, the incubation period of the disease is reduced to a minimum.

Crowded plantings, where air circulation is poor, create a favorable microclimate for the development of the fungus. Insufficient ventilation within the canopy contributes to moisture retention, which provokes infection outbreaks.

The weakening of the shrub's immunity due to unfavorable soil conditions or a lack of mineral nutrition makes the plant more vulnerable. Tissues damaged by pests also become entry points for the fungus.

Breaches in agronomic practices, such as overhead irrigation of the foliage during the evening, drastically increase the risk of infection as water droplets carry spores from one shrub to another.

The main damage from the disease is a sharp decline in the decorative quality of barberry, which is critical for landscaping. The shrubs lose their leaves prematurely, which ruins their aesthetic value.

Massive leaf damage leads to a disruption of the photosynthesis process, which weakens the plant's overall condition. Consequently, the shrub becomes less winter-hardy and more susceptible to other diseases and pests.

The chronic form of the disease leads to a gradual exhaustion of the plant's resources, which can eventually cause dieback of individual branches or the death of the entire specimen. A slowdown in annual growth is observed.

In nurseries, phyllosticta causes significant economic damage as infected planting stock loses its commercial appearance and is unsuitable for sale, requiring additional costs for fungicide treatments.

The infectious background in the area accumulates over the years if measures are not taken to remove infected parts. This creates a constant threat of infection for healthy plants in the immediate vicinity.

The basis of protection is the agronomic method: regular collection and mandatory destruction (burning) of fallen leaves in autumn. This breaks the life cycle of the fungus and reduces the primary infection load.

It is necessary to perform sanitary pruning of infected branches and shoots, including some healthy tissue. Tools must be disinfected after use to avoid spreading spores to other plants.

For prevention in early spring and throughout the season, treatments with copper-based preparations (Bordeaux mixture, copper oxychloride, or modern fungicides) are applied. This creates a protective barrier on the leaf surface.

If signs of the disease are detected, systemic fungicides (e.g., based on triazoles or strobilurins) should be used. Treatments are carried out several times with an interval of 10–14 days, depending on the severity of the infection.

An important element of prevention is maintaining an optimal planting density to ensure good canopy aeration. Plants should be fertilized in a timely manner to maintain natural immunity.
