These pathogens are soil-borne fungi that primarily attack the woody root systems of perennial plants, causing severe decay and necrosis.

The fungus produces white or greyish mycelial strands, known as rhizomorphs, which travel through the soil to infect the root systems of healthy adjacent plants.

Reproduction occurs through both asexual spores (conidia) and sexual spores (ascospores), allowing the pathogen to disperse effectively across a plantation.

The fungus survives for many years in the soil by colonizing organic debris, old roots, and stumps, making it a persistent threat to agricultural fields.

The initial signs of infection are often subtle and manifest as slight wilting or yellowing of the foliage, which can be easily mistaken for nutrient deficiency.

As the disease progresses, the plant shows rapid wilting, followed by leaves turning brown and dropping, as the root system loses its functionality.
