Biatorella lichens

These organisms are strictly epiphytic. They utilize tree bark solely as a physical substrate for attachment and obtain their required nutrients and moisture from the atmosphere, rain, and accumulated dust.

Lichens do not penetrate the inner wood, nor do they feed on the sap or destroy the cambium layer. Their presence is independent of the tree's internal metabolic processes.

Biologically, they consist of a thallus structure containing fungal hyphae and algal cells. In orchard settings, they often appear as crusty or scaly patches adhering to the bark surface.

While they are common in orchards, their presence indicates environmental conditions rather than a direct pathogenic attack on the tree itself.

The primary sign of Biatorella presence is the development of crusty, granular, or scaly patches on the bark of trunks and scaffold branches. Their colors range from greyish to brownish tones.

The fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, typically appear as minute, scattered discs or dots on the surface of the lichen thallus.

Upon examination, one can observe that the lichen is attached to the exterior of the bark. It can be scraped off without disturbing or damaging the living tissues underneath, distinguishing it from necrotic diseases.

These lichens are most frequently encountered on mature trees with stable bark, or in areas of the tree that remain consistently shaded and humid.

Over time, these colonies may expand, covering large segments of the bark and changing the overall appearance of the tree trunk.

High relative humidity is the fundamental requirement for the growth of Biatorella lichens. Orchards with poor air circulation often experience higher rates of lichen colonization.

While not direct parasites, lichens can cause secondary harm. They provide a protective habitat where harmful pests, such as aphids, mites, and scale insects, often hibernate.

Extensive lichen coverage can theoretically interfere with gas exchange through the bark lenticels, potentially impacting the overall vitality of the tree if left unchecked for years.

The dense structure of lichens traps moisture against the bark. This creates a perpetually damp environment that may promote the development of secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

From an aesthetic perspective, heavy lichen colonization lowers the visual quality of the orchard and nursery stock, often signaling neglect to the observer.

While the lichens themselves do not kill the tree, they are often associated with declining, old, or poorly maintained trees that are more susceptible to other biotic and abiotic stresses.

The most effective long-term management strategy is pruning to improve light penetration and air circulation within the canopy, which naturally suppresses lichen growth.

Mechanical cleaning is highly effective. Carefully scraping the bark with specialized brushes or wooden scrapers can remove the bulk of the colonies without harming the tree.

Chemical applications, such as iron sulfate or copper-based fungicides, are commonly used in the spring to disinfect the bark and kill lichen growth while simultaneously treating other surface pathogens.

Whitewashing the trunks with lime-based solutions is a traditional and effective preventative method that keeps the bark surface inhospitable to lichen spore settlement.
