Fusarium wilt is a severe vascular disease caused by fungi in the genus Fusarium, most notably Fusarium oxysporum. The fungus enters the plant through the roots, colonizes the xylem vessels, and releases toxins, effectively cutting off the plant's water and nutrient supply.

The development of Fusarium wilt is favored by warm soil temperatures and moderate moisture levels. The pathogen produces resistant structures called chlamydospores, which allow it to persist in the soil for several years, even in the absence of a suitable host plant.
