Strawberry begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera) is a charming perennial belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. Despite its common name, it is not a true begonia but a member of the saxifrage group, native to Asia.

This plant is characterized by its rosettes of fuzzy, rounded leaves with silver-grey veins and reddish undersides. It produces long, thin stolons that carry daughter plantlets, making it an excellent trailing plant.

The culture thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate foliage, while low light will cause the plant to lose its vibrant leaf variegation and become leggy.

Soil requirements involve a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and organic compost is ideal for maintaining the necessary pH balance.

Temperature control is vital: the plant prefers cool to moderate environments. It is not cold-hardy in severe climates, so it is typically grown as a houseplant or a seasonal garden filler.

Main diseases and pests

Mealybugs are a frequent pest for this species. These insects hide in the tight crevices of the rosettes and stems, extracting sap and weakening the plant's structural integrity.

Spider mites represent another significant threat, especially during dry winter months. They cause fine webbing and yellowing of the leaves, eventually leading to premature senescence.

Root rot is the most common physiological disorder caused by overwatering. It is essential to ensure that pots have adequate drainage holes and that the soil dries slightly between waterings.

Aphids can occasionally infest the flower stalks of the strawberry begonia. Gentle washing with insecticidal soap is usually sufficient to clear the infestation without harming the plant.
