These plants originated in tropical and subtropical regions, although several species have successfully adapted to temperate climates. Their natural range includes freshwater bodies with still or slow-moving water, where they can form dense, floating mats that significantly influence the local aquatic ecosystem and water quality.

Botanically, Salviniaceae are characterized by floating leaves covered in specialized trichomes (hairs) that trap air, providing buoyancy. Reproduction occurs both vegetatively through fragmentation and through spores contained within specialized structures called sori, which are submerged on the modified underwater leaves.

Agronomic requirements for successful cultivation include maintaining a stable water level, consistent lighting, and optimal water temperatures during the growing season. The plants are sensitive to chemical water pollution and require a consistent supply of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water to support rapid biomass accumulation.

Economic applications for Salviniaceae are diverse: they are widely used in the aquarium trade for providing shelter for fry, in phytoremediation projects to absorb excess nutrients from wastewater, and as a raw material for organic fertilizers. While generally resilient, they can be affected by specific phytophagous insects and fungal rots if water conditions become stagnant or improperly aerated.
