Lime (Citrus aurantiifolia) is a prominent evergreen species within the Rutaceae family. As a tropical crop, it requires high ambient temperatures and is highly sensitive to cold, making it unsuitable for regions prone to even mild frosts. It thrives in stable climates with temperatures consistently between 25°C and 30°C.

Successful cultivation of this crop relies on well-drained, fertile soil types, typically loams or sandy loams, with a pH balance between 6.0 and 7.5. Irrigation must be managed carefully, as the tree requires consistent moisture but is highly susceptible to root diseases caused by waterlogging.

Originating from Southeast Asia, the lime tree has spread across the tropics, with significant production centers currently in Mexico, India, and Brazil. It is an essential crop for regions where year-round heat and humidity allow for continuous growth and multiple flowering flushes.

Botanically, the plant is a shrubby tree reaching heights of up to 5 meters, often featuring thorny branches. The leaves are ovate and aromatic, while the small, white, fragrant flowers produce fruits that are renowned for their high citric acid and essential oil content.

Commercially, lime is cultivated for fresh market consumption, juice extraction, and the production of peel oil for the beverage, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries. Its versatility in both culinary and industrial applications makes it a high-value agricultural asset.

Yield

The yield of a lime tree depends heavily on orchard management, fertilization schedules, and tree age. A mature, well-managed tree in a commercial orchard can produce an average yield ranging from 50 to 150 kilograms of fruit annually, depending on the cultivar and local environmental conditions.

Main diseases and pests

Pest management is critical for lime production, as the crop is frequently attacked by citrus aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. These pests cause significant damage to the canopy and fruit quality, necessitating integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain tree health.

Diseases such as citrus tristeza virus, canker, and anthracnose are among the most serious threats. Prevention is the primary strategy, involving the use of disease-free certified nursery stock, regular pruning to improve airflow within the canopy, and the timely application of fungicides.

Harvesting

Harvesting is a critical operation performed manually to ensure fruit quality. Unlike some other citrus, limes are typically harvested while still green and firm, as this is when they are most preferred by consumers. Frequent picking cycles are necessary to capture the entire yield at the peak of quality.
