Rafflesiaceae is a family of highly specialized parasitic plants that lack chlorophyll, leaves, stems, and true roots. These plants exist primarily as a network of filaments embedded within the tissues of their host plants, from which they derive all essential nutrients and moisture, meaning they are incapable of independent survival.

The native range of Rafflesiaceae is restricted to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They exclusively parasitize vines of the genus Tetrastigma. It is critical to note that these plants are not recognized as agricultural crops, as their development is entirely dependent on the host’s metabolic processes, making conventional cultivation impossible.
The most distinctive botanical feature of this family is the floral morphology. Some species produce the largest individual flowers in the plant kingdom, such as Rafflesia arnoldii. These flowers emit a pungent scent of decaying matter to attract carrion-feeding insects, which are essential for the pollination process within the dense, humid rainforest environment.
Environmental requirements for these plants are extremely specific, necessitating the high humidity and constant temperatures of tropical ecosystems. There is no known agricultural technique for cultivating Rafflesiaceae, as researchers have not succeeded in replicating the complex symbiotic relationship between the parasite and the host vine in an artificial setting.
The economic and practical uses of this family are limited to ecological research and scientific curiosity, as well as their role in supporting local ecotourism initiatives. They are not cultivated commercially. Rather than being plagued by pests or diseases typical of agricultural crops, the primary threat to these unique organisms is habitat loss, which disrupts the delicate biological balance required for their survival.
