The plant features distinct morphology, characterized by woody climbing stems and specialized foliage that terminates in complex trap structures known as pitchers. These pitchers contain a combination of nectar to attract prey and specialized digestive enzymes that break down captured organisms to provide essential nitrogen and phosphorus for the plant.

Agronomic requirements for Nepenthes are highly specific compared to traditional crops.
