Monosolenium (Monosolenium tenerum) is a unique plant belonging to the family Monosoleniaceae. It is a liverwort that lacks true leaves or roots, instead forming a thallus—a flat, dichotomously branched body of deep green color. Its appearance is highly appreciated by aquascapers for its ability to create dense, textured green patches.

The origin of this culture is traced back to East Asia, where it naturally grows in moist environments, particularly along riverbanks and in shaded, humid habitats. Due to its adaptability, it has become a staple in tropical aquarium cultivation, where it thrives in conditions that mimic its natural moisture-rich environment.
For successful cultivation, the plant requires a stable aquatic environment. Temperatures ranging from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius are generally considered optimal. It is highly sensitive to water circulation; stagnant or very gentle water is preferred, as strong currents can break the delicate thallus into smaller, unmanageable pieces.
Lighting is a critical factor for Monosolenium health. While it can survive under low light conditions, it performs significantly better under moderate to high lighting. When provided with sufficient light, the plant exhibits a compact, dark green growth pattern that is aesthetically superior to the pale, elongated form seen in low-light setups.
The plant does not strictly require high-tech carbon dioxide injection, but the addition of CO2 and regular liquid micro-fertilizers will significantly boost the growth rate and structural integrity of the plant. Maintaining clean water is essential to prevent the accumulation of debris within the dense thallus, which could otherwise lead to decay.
Monosolenium is primarily used as a decorative element in aquascaping. It is frequently employed to create carpets on the substrate or attached to hardscape elements like rocks and wood. Propagation is achieved through vegetative division, where small clusters are separated and placed in new locations to continue their growth.
The most significant threats to Monosolenium include the competition with fast-growing algae and the buildup of organic detritus. Algae can easily entangle in the thallus, making removal extremely difficult without damaging the plant itself. Additionally, poor water quality can lead to browning and necrosis of the plant's older segments.
