These plants thrive in environments where organic matter is abundant and moisture levels remain consistently high throughout the year.

The morphology of Balanophoraceae is highly distinctive. They lack true leaves and stems. Their primary vegetative organ is a specialized structure known as a haustorium, which penetrates the root tissue of the host plant.
