Panuban (Citrus panuban) is a rare species of evergreen woody plant belonging to the Rutaceae family. This species was historically identified in the Philippine flora and is closely related to other wild citrus fruits found throughout Southeast Asia.

The plant prefers a humid tropical climate with a distinct wet season. It is extremely sensitive to sudden temperature fluctuations and frost, which limits its natural cultivation range to the tropical latitudes of the Philippine archipelago.

Successful growth of the crop requires fertile, well-drained loam or sandy-loam soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH level. A key factor is the continuous presence of organic matter in the soil, which stimulates active root system development.

Trees of this species require regular moisture; however, waterlogging in the root zone is detrimental to the plant. Optimal growth conditions include high relative humidity and protection from direct, dehydrating winds.

In terms of agrotechnology, the crop requires formative pruning to establish a strong canopy structure. Regular sanitary maintenance helps avoid branch overcrowding, which promotes better aeration and reduces the risk of pathogen development.

Yield

The economic use of panuban is based on the harvest of its fruits, which have organoleptic properties similar to other wild citrus varieties. The fruits are characterized by a distinct aroma and are often used in local cuisine for preparing sauces or condiments.

Yield capacity for panuban largely depends on light intensity and nutrient quality during the flowering period. Although it is not an industrial standard, it is valued in local orchards for its stable fruiting under tropical conditions.

Traditional use also includes the application of bark and leaves in regional folk medicine. The essential oils found in the fruit peel hold potential for the perfume industry, making the crop a candidate for further breeding research.

Fruits are harvested manually upon reaching biological maturity. The peel of the panuban is sufficiently thick, ensuring satisfactory transportability for short distances to meet the needs of local markets.

Scaling up panuban production is difficult due to the lack of specialized nurseries; therefore, the crop is more commonly found as part of the biodiversity in smallholdings or within natural forest ecosystems.

Like most members of the Citrus genus, panuban is susceptible to pests common in the tropical zone. These include citrus aphids and various scale insects, which damage young shoots and leaves.

An essential aspect of plant protection is monitoring for fungal diseases such as anthracnose. High humidity combined with poor air circulation triggers leaf spotting, which can rapidly spread throughout the tree canopy.

Root rot, resulting from soil waterlogging, poses a significant threat to young seedlings. Prevention relies on proper irrigation management and the use of copper-based fungicides during periods of high humidity.
