Description

Growing requirements

The abalone mushroom (Pleurotus cystidiosus subsp. abalonus) belongs to the Pleurotaceae family. This species is a tropical and subtropical fungus, requiring temperatures ranging from +22°C to +28°C for active growth and development.

Unlike common oyster mushrooms, this variety is highly thermophilic and sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations, which can halt fruit body production. A high humidity level between 85% and 90% is essential for developing healthy mushrooms.

The substrate typically consists of a mixture of straw, hardwood sawdust, and nitrogen supplements like bran. Proper sterilization or pasteurization is mandatory because this species is less competitive against mold compared to other oyster varieties.

Light intensity should be kept between 500 and 1000 lux, as it is necessary for proper development of the fruit bodies. Without enough light, stems tend to become long and thin while caps remain underdeveloped.

Adequate ventilation is critical for controlling carbon dioxide levels. Poor airflow leads to deformed mushrooms and stagnant growth in the cultivation chambers, requiring a regular rate of air exchange.

Yield

The yield of abalone mushrooms is largely determined by the quality of the spawn and the precision of environmental controls. On average, it ranges from 15% to 25% of the substrate's wet weight per flush.

Production cycles generally consist of two to three main flushes before the substrate becomes depleted. Achieving high biological efficiency requires balanced supplementation and careful monitoring of the mycelium growth.

With professional handling, a single mushroom block can produce 3–4 kilograms of mushrooms throughout its lifespan. These mushrooms are prized for their firm texture, which remains intact even during cooking.

Fruit bodies typically emerge 3–4 weeks post-inoculation, provided that the climate is stable. The speed of growth is directly linked to the metabolic activity within the mushroom block.

Commercial mushroom farms utilize automated climate control systems to ensure consistent yields, making this crop a viable option for specialized indoor agricultural producers.

Main diseases and pests

The most common threat is the growth of competitive molds, such as Trichoderma, which thrive in poorly sterilized substrates. Maintaining high hygiene standards in the production facility is the best preventive measure.

Pests like sciarid flies are significant threats as they can damage the delicate young mushrooms and introduce harmful bacteria. Using light traps and strict sanitation helps minimize their impact on the crop.

Bacterial blotch is a common disease characterized by yellow or brown spots on the caps, often caused by excessive moisture and inadequate air circulation during the development of fruit bodies.

Maintaining a balanced pH level in the substrate is crucial to suppress unwanted microflora that could hinder the growth of the abalone mushroom mycelium. Adding calcium carbonate or gypsum is a standard practice.

Regular monitoring of the growing environment and quick removal of infected blocks are essential steps to prevent the spread of diseases within the cultivation area.

Harvesting

Harvesting should occur when the edge of the mushroom cap begins to flatten but has not yet started to curl upwards. Harvesting at this stage ensures the best flavor and texture for the consumer.

Mushrooms are harvested by cutting the entire cluster at the base with a sharp knife, taking care to avoid disturbing the mycelial block. Proper cutting prevents bruising and extends the shelf life of the fruit bodies.

Once harvested, mushrooms must be pre-cooled to +2°C to +4°C immediately. The abalone mushroom is well-regarded for its durability and excellent shipping capabilities compared to other Pleurotus species.

Packaging in perforated containers allows for proper airflow during distribution, preventing condensation that could lead to spoilage during transit to retail stores.

Daily inspection of the mushroom blocks is recommended during the harvesting period to ensure that each cluster is picked at the peak of its quality and development.
