Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is a perennial herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It is primarily propagated vegetatively through the division of rhizomes to ensure genetic uniformity and faster establishment of the crop.

Seed propagation is also possible but requires specialized nursery conditions. Seeds should be sown immediately after harvesting, as they lose viability rapidly, and germination typically occurs within 30 to 45 days.

Seedlings are transferred to the main field when they are approximately 12 to 18 months old. Proper spacing is crucial, with typical densities ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 plants per hectare depending on site conditions.

The field must be prepared with thorough soil tilling and the incorporation of organic matter to improve structure. Cardamom thrives best in areas with protection from strong winds, often utilized in agroforestry systems.
