Selenicereus extensus is a botanical species belonging to the Cactaceae family. Native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly Guyana, this plant is an epiphyte, naturally climbing or hanging from trees in the dense canopy of tropical forests.

The morphology of this cactus includes elongated, multi-angled or flat stems that allow it to effectively photosynthesize in low-light environments. Unlike desert cacti, it prefers a more humid microclimate and is well-adapted to the conditions found in tropical forest ecosystems.

Cultivation requires a highly porous and well-draining potting medium. A mixture of orchid bark, perlite, and organic peat works best to replicate the natural habitat of this epiphytic plant, ensuring that roots are not kept in waterlogged conditions.

Temperature requirements are generally high, ideally ranging between 18°C and 26°C. The plant should be protected from direct, intense sunlight, which can scorch its stems, while keeping the ambient humidity levels elevated to promote vigorous growth.

Watering practices should follow a cycle of drying out completely between irrigation sessions. During the winter, the plant enters a semi-dormant stage, necessitating reduced watering to prevent root rot and other moisture-related diseases.
