Planting of Crocosmia hybrids corms should occur in spring once the soil temperature consistently reaches at least 8–10 degrees Celsius. In most temperate regions, late April or early May is considered the optimal planting window.
For earlier flower production, producers often utilize container planting. Corms are started in pots during March, and once the threat of late frosts has passed, they are transplanted into the field to avoid root disturbance.
The planting depth typically ranges from 5 to 10 centimeters, depending on the size of the corm and the specific soil texture. In heavy soils, a layer of horticultural sand should be placed at the bottom of the planting hole to ensure adequate drainage.
Spacings of 15–20 centimeters between plants are recommended to ensure sufficient nutrient access and air circulation. Proper spacing is a key factor in reducing the humidity levels around the foliage, which helps to minimize the risk of fungal diseases.

Growing requirements

Fertilization with balanced NPK compounds should be applied in two main pulses: the first at the beginning of the growing season to support foliage development, and the second during early bud formation to promote vibrant, lasting blossoms.
Yield
Productivity is measured by the number and quality of flower spikes produced per corm. With optimal care, a mature corm can generate several robust stems, each carrying a succession of brilliant flowers that provide long-lasting color.
Crocosmia hybrids are highly valued in the commercial cut flower market. The stems are durable and long-lived in vases, as the flowers open gradually from the bottom to the top, maintaining high visual appeal for up to two weeks.
The multiplication rate of these hybrids is impressive, allowing growers to quickly build up a sustainable stock. A single healthy corm can produce numerous cormlets per season, ensuring a consistent supply for expansion or replacement.
Managing the plant for yield involves the removal of spent flower spikes. This process directs the plant's metabolic energy away from seed production and toward the development of a larger, more vigorous replacement corm for the following season.
In industrial settings, climate resilience is a critical factor. While hardy, the corms should be harvested in colder climates to prevent freezing damage and ensure that the genetic stock remains healthy and viable for the next planting cycle.
Main diseases and pests
Thrips represent the most significant pest threat, often feeding on foliage and budding flowers. Regular monitoring and the application of systemic insecticides are necessary during the active growing phase to prevent cosmetic damage and stunted growth.
Underground pests, such as wireworms, can damage the corms directly. Crop rotation and pre-planting soil treatment are standard agricultural practices to manage these threats and protect the integrity of the planting material.
Fungal diseases like Fusarium wilt and gray mold are common if drainage is poor or if corms are stored improperly. Symptoms include yellowing of leaves and soft, decaying tissue at the base of the corm, which can spread rapidly in storage.
Disease prevention relies heavily on the thorough inspection and treatment of corms before storage or planting. Fungicidal dips are often used to reduce the prevalence of pathogens on the corm surface.
Viral infections, manifested by mosaic patterns or streaking on the leaves, have no cure. Any plants displaying signs of viral infection must be rogued and destroyed immediately to prevent the transmission of the virus to healthy plants.
Harvesting
For the cut flower trade, harvest occurs in the early morning when the humidity is high and the flowers are just beginning to open. This timing ensures that the stems retain maximum hydration during transportation and shelf life.
Corm harvesting is conducted in autumn as the foliage begins to senesce and turn yellow. Care must be taken to lift the corms from the soil without damaging the basal plate, as mechanical damage is a primary entry point for pathogens.
Once harvested, the corms should be cleaned of soil debris and dried in a well-ventilated, shaded area for about a week. Protection from direct sunlight is crucial to prevent dehydration and overheating during the curing process.
Sorting and cleaning follow the drying phase, where cormlets are detached and damaged corms are discarded. Keeping only the healthiest, most vigorous material ensures that the planting stock remains uniform and productive for future use.
Storage requires a cool, dry, and dark environment, ideally kept between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius. Placing corms in perforated containers with dry peat or sand helps maintain proper humidity levels and prevents the corms from shriveling during winter.
