Sowing dates
Propagation of the hybrid cyclamen is primarily carried out by seeds, as first-generation hybrids retain the specified varietal traits. Sowing takes place between August and September to ensure flowering in the following year.
Seeds are sown in a light, sterile substrate consisting of a mixture of peat and sand. They should be covered with soil at a depth of no more than 0.5–1 cm, as they require complete darkness and a stable temperature of about 18-20 degrees Celsius to germinate.
Once seedlings emerge, the trays are moved into the light, avoiding direct sunlight. Pricking out is performed after the formation of two full leaves into individual pots with loose soil mix.
Maintaining proper humidity is a critical step: overwatering at the seedling stage leads to rapid root system decay due to fungal infections. Bottom watering is recommended to avoid eroding the soil around the delicate shoots.
During growth, it is essential to monitor soil acidity, maintaining a pH level of 5.5–6.5, which is optimal for the proper absorption of nutrients from the substrate.
Growing requirements
The crop belongs to the Primulaceae family and requires specific conditions for full development. This plant prefers a cool climate where daytime temperatures do not exceed 20 degrees, and nighttime temperatures drop to 10–12 degrees.
Cultivation requires well-drained soil rich in organic matter with excellent air permeability. The use of heavy clay soils is strictly prohibited, as they cause corm rot.
Lighting should be intense but diffused. In agricultural greenhouse production, shading is used to prevent leaf scorching and overheating of the root system.
Air humidity should be kept high, yet constant air circulation is necessary. Stagnant humid air inevitably leads to the development of pathogens.
Fertilizing is conducted with mineral fertilizers high in potassium and phosphorus during the active growing season, avoiding excess nitrogen, which promotes tissue softness and reduces disease resistance.
Main diseases and pests
The main threats to this crop are fungal diseases such as Fusarium wilt and gray mold (Botrytis). These spread rapidly when ventilation is poor and the soil is overwatered.
The most dangerous pests are cyclamen mites and thrips. Mites damage growth points, causing leaf distortion and complete growth stagnation, rendering the plant unsuitable for commercial sale.
To combat insects, systemic insecticides and acaricides are used, strictly following dosage guidelines. Treatments are applied in the evening or during overcast weather to avoid phytotoxicity.
Disease prevention consists of maintaining production hygiene, disinfecting tools, and keeping optimal spacing between pots to ensure free air access.
Upon discovering signs of corm rot, infected specimens must be immediately isolated or destroyed, as the infection spreads through irrigation water and airborne spores.
