Growing requirements
Aeollanthus parvifolius is a fascinating perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Characterized by its succulent nature, this plant has adapted to thrive in environments where water availability is periodic, allowing it to store moisture effectively in its tissues.
The species originates from the tropical regions of Africa. In its native habitat, it grows in well-drained, often rocky substrates, where it benefits from high light intensity and warm temperatures that persist throughout most of the year.
Regarding climate requirements, this plant demands consistent warmth. It is highly intolerant of frost and cold drafts. Therefore, in non-tropical regions, it is primarily cultivated as a decorative indoor plant or within specialized greenhouse environments.
The soil structure must be extremely porous to ensure aeration and prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of plant failure. A commercial succulent mix amended with inorganic materials like pumice or coarse grit is highly recommended for optimal root health.
Cultivation practices focus on careful irrigation management. During the active growing season, the substrate should be allowed to dry out significantly between waterings. During the dormant winter phase, irrigation should be reduced to a bare minimum to sustain the plant without encouraging excessive growth.
