Mode of action
Fish oil in agricultural settings functions primarily as an organic horticultural oil. It is categorized as a contact insecticide that works through physical rather than chemical toxicological pathways.
The primary mode of action is the physical coating of the pest's body. By enveloping the insect or mite in a thin layer of oil, the product blocks their spiracles, effectively suffocating the target organism.
In addition to suffocation, the oily residue alters the surface tension of leaves and stems. This makes it extremely difficult for pests to attach, feed, or lay eggs, providing a protective barrier against infestation.
As a natural substance, fish oil is biodegradable and breaks down quickly under the influence of UV radiation and soil microorganisms. This profile makes it a popular choice for sustainable and organic crop management programs.
When applied, fish oil is usually formulated as an emulsion. This improves the coverage and adhesion of the active ingredient to the waxy cuticle of the plant, ensuring that the oil remains effective for a longer duration.
What it targets
The efficacy of fish oil is highest against soft-bodied insects and mites. These organisms lack the protective hard exoskeleton that would otherwise repel or resist the mechanical action of the oil.
Aphids are the primary target for fish oil applications. The substance effectively coats the clusters of aphids on new growth, causing rapid mortality without affecting beneficial predators once the oil has dried.
Spider mites are another major target. The oil acts to disrupt their webbing and limits their mobility across the leaf surface, which prevents the expansion of mite colonies in greenhouse or field conditions.
Scale insects in the crawler stage are susceptible to treatment. During this mobile phase, before they develop their protective scale covering, the oil can effectively penetrate their soft exterior.

Rates and timing
Application rates vary depending on the product concentration, but a standard application involves preparing a 0.5% to 2% aqueous emulsion. Always refer to specific product labels for accurate dilution ratios.
It is essential to ensure thorough coverage of all plant surfaces. Particular attention should be paid to the underside of the leaves, where pests typically gather to feed and reproduce.
Treatments should be scheduled during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. This practice prevents the oil from magnifying sunlight and causing phytotoxic burns on the leaf tissue.
Multiple applications are usually necessary to achieve complete control. Intervals of 7 to 10 days are generally recommended to capture successive generations of pests that may have hatched after the initial application.
When mixing with other bio-pesticides, conduct a compatibility test first. Fish oil can alter the stability or pH of the mixture, potentially reducing the effectiveness of other active ingredients.
Restrictions
Phytotoxicity is the main limiting factor. Applications should be avoided when temperatures exceed 25-28 degrees Celsius, as the oil can clog stomata and stress the plant, leading to chlorosis or necrosis.
Avoid applying during the bloom period. The oily film can damage flower petals and may interfere with the foraging activity of pollinators, such as bees and other beneficial insects.
Rainfall significantly reduces the effectiveness of fish oil treatments. If rain occurs shortly after application, the oil will be washed away, and a re-application will be necessary to maintain protection.
Plants with pubescent (hairy) leaves are generally unsuitable for oil-based treatments. The oil becomes trapped in the hairs, leading to excessive accumulation and subsequent tissue damage.
Storage is critical for maintaining product quality. Fish oil must be kept in a cool, dark, and airtight container to prevent oxidation and rancidity, which can render the product ineffective.
