Mode of action
Mineral oils are refined petroleum products classified as contact insecticides and acaricides. They act through physical rather than biological mechanisms, meaning thorough coverage is essential for the success of any treatment.
The primary mode of action is the physical suffocation of pests. When sprayed on insects or mites, the oil creates a film that covers their spiracles (breathing pores), cutting off oxygen supply and leading to death.
Additionally, mineral oils can disrupt the development of eggs and immature stages by dissolving the protective wax coating on their cuticles, which leads to desiccation and dehydration.
Because they do not rely on specific biochemical interactions, mineral oils are highly effective against pests that have developed resistance to traditional synthetic insecticides.
These oils are widely used in integrated pest management (IPM) systems due to their ability to provide control without leaving harmful chemical residues that affect natural predator populations in the long term.
What it targets
Mineral oils are primarily targeted at overwintering pests, making them a cornerstone of spring horticultural protection programs.
They are highly effective against scale insects, which are often protected by hard or waxy covers that repel conventional contact poisons.
Spider mites, gall mites, and their eggs are key targets for mineral oil applications. The oil penetrates the dense clusters of eggs often hidden under bark crevices.
Aphids and whiteflies, especially during their dormant stages on tree branches, are also susceptible to oil-based applications before the growing season commences.

Rates and timing
The timing of mineral oil application is critical. It is most effective during the dormant or delayed-dormant stage of trees, just before buds begin to swell and open.
Temperature monitoring is essential. Applications should generally be avoided if temperatures drop below 4°C (40°F) or exceed 25°C (77°F) to prevent plant stress and potential phytotoxicity.
Compatibility with other pesticides is limited. Mineral oils should not be mixed with sulfur-based products or certain fungicides, as these combinations can significantly increase the risk of leaf burn and bark damage.
For effective results, the spray must be applied until run-off to ensure that every crack and crevice of the tree bark is coated, as this is where pests typically overwinter.
Application intervals depend on weather conditions. Heavy rain immediately following an application may wash the oil film away, necessitating a repeat treatment for full efficacy.
Restrictions
Phytotoxicity remains the biggest limitation. Applying oil when plants are experiencing drought stress or during active, tender growth stages can cause leaves to yellow and drop prematurely.
Oil-based formulations can block the stomata (breathing pores) of plants if applied incorrectly, interfering with normal transpiration and gas exchange processes during critical growth periods.
Safety during handling is mandatory. While mineral oils are generally low in toxicity to humans, the spray mist can cause respiratory irritation, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.
Storage conditions must be strictly controlled. Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat sources or open flames, as the product is combustible.
Always verify the quality of the emulsion. If the oil separates from the water within the tank, it must be agitated thoroughly; otherwise, high concentrations of oil can cause severe localized tissue damage.
