Ioxynil-octanoate

Description

Mode of action

Ioxynil-octanoate belongs to the nitrile chemical class and acts as a selective contact herbicide. Its primary function is to inhibit photosynthesis within the cells of susceptible weeds, which leads to metabolic disruption and plant death.

The active ingredient is absorbed primarily through the leaves. Thanks to its octanoate ester formulation, it is rapidly taken up by weed tissues, ensuring high efficacy even under variable field conditions.

The product provides a rapid "stop effect," noticeable just a few hours after application. Within a few days, weeds begin to show signs of chlorosis and necrosis, eventually leading to the complete destruction of the plants.

A key feature of ioxynil-octanoate is its lack of systemic movement within the treated crop. This makes it safe for the crop plants, as the action is restricted strictly to the contact zone on the weed leaves.

As a contact herbicide, it does not accumulate in the crop roots, which is vital for maintaining the health and vigor of cereals and onions during the early stages of vegetation.

What it targets

Herbicides based on ioxynil-octanoate are used to control a broad range of annual broad-leaved weeds. They are highly effective against species that have developed resistance to other common herbicide groups.

  • Common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album)
  • Black bindweed (Fallopia convolvulus)
  • Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis)
  • Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)
  • Hemp-nettle species (Galeopsis)

The main crops for application include small grain cereals (wheat, barley, rye) and onions. The product is most effective when applied at the early growth stage of weeds, typically when they have between 2 to 4 true leaves.

In onion production, this herbicide serves as an essential tool for managing weeds that are difficult to control with other active ingredients due to the specific anatomy of the crop.

Timely application significantly reduces competition for water, nutrients, and sunlight, which is critical for maximizing crop development and ensuring higher final yields.

Rates and timing

Application rates vary depending on the specific weed spectrum and the growth stage of the weeds. Generally, the product is applied as a foliar spray during the early post-emergence period.

Optimal results are achieved at air temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The weeds should be in an active state of growth to ensure maximum absorption of the active ingredient.

Avoid applying the herbicide if the crops are under stress caused by drought, frost, or pest damage, as this may reduce selectivity and increase the risk of temporary crop injury.

The spray volume should be calibrated to ensure thorough coverage of the leaf surface without causing significant runoff to the soil, typically ranging between 200 and 300 liters per hectare.

Timing is crucial: efficacy decreases significantly once weeds exceed the 4–6 leaf stage, as the physiological activity and surface area of the weeds change, making them more resilient.

Restrictions

Ioxynil-octanoate is considered moderately toxic, and operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, respirators, and protective clothing, during handling and application.

Strict adherence to label rates is necessary to avoid phytotoxicity to the crops, as excessive doses can interfere with the crop's normal development and yield formation.

Prevent spray drift onto adjacent fields containing sensitive crops, such as legumes or sugar beets, as the product exhibits high herbicidal activity against many broad-leaved plant species.

When tank-mixing with other pesticides, conduct a compatibility test beforehand to ensure there is no precipitation or loss of efficacy for any of the mixed components.

Storage should be in original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and protected from unauthorized access, children, and domestic animals.
