Advantages of Using Electric Heating Cable for Soil Heating

To ensure proper soil heating in a greenhouse or other enclosed space, special cables for soil heating are often used. Their use allows for continuous maintenance of the required characteristics of the top, fertile soil layer where plant roots are located. The operation of such technology has found its place not only on large industrial sites but also among gardeners striving to grow plants as long as possible.

Advantages of Using Cable for Soil Heating in a Greenhouse

Heating the soil layer with a cable has several advantages that make this method more popular compared to other options:

  • One-time installation. After installation, the system does not need to be dismantled during periods when it is not in use. If relocation to another area becomes necessary in the future, moving the system will be much easier than with a greenhouse water-based heated floor.
  • Ability to start soil heating with the cable in the greenhouse at the desired time. In case of unexpected frosts or sudden cold spells, it is enough to plug the system into a power outlet. Soon, the soil on the plot begins to warm up, allowing plants to avoid freezing.
  • Simple temperature regulation. This is achieved using a thermostat, which can be set to a specific temperature it maintains regardless of air heating levels. The settings can be adjusted depending on the stage of plant development. The built-in automation maintains the set temperature, receiving data from a temperature sensor placed in the soil.
  • Ensures even heating of the entire soil layer at the specified depth, allowing the system to operate without constant human presence.
  • Easy installation that can be done independently. This requires only a brief instruction and following the steps in the correct order.

Effective use of soil heating in a greenhouse with electric cables allows obtaining an excellent harvest throughout the year.

Choosing a Cable for Soil Heating and Calculating Its Length

Soil heating system for greenhouses ensures maximum operational efficiency only when the appropriate heat conductor is selected. It is also necessary to consider the power rating. Typically, soil is heated to a temperature of 15-25 degrees. This value is sufficient for the growth and development of the majority of plant species. Electric cables, when installed according to the instructions, are capable of creating and maintaining these parameters.

To maintain the required temperature values, it is usually sufficient to install a heating element with a power rating of 15-20 W/m. Using more powerful variants may lead to excessive overheating of the soil layer. This could damage the plant's root system and result in its drying out.

When organizing soil heating in a greenhouse using an electric cable, consider the allowable bending radius of the cable. This information is usually indicated by the manufacturer on the labeling. This is necessary to ensure the ability to install the cable product with an appropriate spacing, which for greenhouses is 10-15 cm. Otherwise, it will not be possible to create conditions for even soil heating, which may cause uneven ripening of plants or their death.

To calculate the required length of the electric heating cable, you need to know the area of the soil surface, the characteristics of the greenhouse itself, and the cable specifications. For example, with a cable having a total power rating of 100 W/m² when used in a greenhouse with double glazing, calculations are quite straightforward. Simply multiply the soil surface area by the cable’s power rating. The resulting value should then be divided by the power of one meter of cable. If we take a soil area of 20 m² and perform all calculations, we obtain a result of 133.3 meters of cable product. All recommendations specified in the installation and use manual were followed during calculations. Consequently, maximum efficiency of cable usage and even soil heating will be achieved.

When selecting electric soil heating for a greenhouse, consider power, installation rules, and area. This will ensure effective use of equipment and create conditions for plant growth throughout the year.
