Pea thrips

They possess narrow wings with a distinctive fringe of long hairs, which is characteristic of the family Thripidae. Their mouthparts are of the rasping-sucking type, specialized for feeding on plant cell contents.

Larvae are generally lighter in color, appearing yellow or orange, and are highly active during their feeding phase. They undergo several developmental stages before reaching the adult form.

The species overwinters as adults in the soil or within plant debris. This life cycle strategy allows them to survive cold winter temperatures and emerge quickly when conditions become favorable.

Accurate identification usually requires a hand lens or a microscope, as they can be easily confused with other thrips species found in field margins and weeds.

This pest primarily attacks a wide range of legumes, including peas, clover, lucerne (alfalfa), soybeans, and vetch. It infests both vegetative parts and reproductive organs of the plants.

If the economic threshold is exceeded, application of approved systemic insecticides is necessary to suppress populations, especially during the critical budding and flowering stages.
