How to identify

The coffee thrips (Diarthrothrips coffeae) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests affecting coffee crops specifically in African regions.

Adult specimens typically possess an elongated body measuring approximately 1–1.5 mm in length, characterized by a dark brown or nearly black coloration. They feature narrow wings with a characteristic fringe, enabling short-distance dispersal between coffee plants.

Larvae are generally lighter in color, appearing yellowish or whitish, which often makes them difficult to detect on the undersides of leaves. The pupal stage commonly occurs on the host plant or within the surface soil layer directly beneath the plant.

While reproduction is sexual, the species is capable of rapid population growth under favorable climatic conditions, leading to significant outbreaks in a short period.

Precise identification usually requires the use of a magnifying glass, as their small size allows them to hide effectively within leaf axils, flower buds, and among young developing shoots.

What it damages

The primary host of Diarthrothrips coffeae is the coffee plant (Coffea arabica and related species). The pest preferentially feeds on young, succulent leaves and developing floral buds.

In cases of severe infestation, the pests can inflict damage on both leaf tissue and fruit sets, which ultimately results in a critical reduction in the overall yield of the plantation.

Equipped with specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts, the thrips extract cell sap from tissues, which disrupts photosynthesis and metabolic processes, significantly weakening the coffee tree.

Under conditions of environmental stress, such as prolonged drought or poor orchard management, the damage caused by thrips can be lethal to young coffee seedlings, leading to high mortality rates.

Beyond direct tissue damage, thrips may also act as indirect vectors for various phytopathogens, further complicating the health and vitality of coffee estates.

When it appears

The activity patterns of Diarthrothrips coffeae are heavily influenced by meteorological conditions. Peak development typically occurs during periods of low rainfall and high ambient temperatures.

During dry seasons, the insect's life cycle is shortened, allowing for faster generation turnover and a rapid escalation of population density within coffee crops.

While heavy rains often suppress population growth, in protected, shaded, or poorly ventilated areas of the plantation, thrips can maintain consistent activity levels throughout the year.

Monitoring efforts should be intensified towards the end of the dry season, as this is when the risk of economic damage to young coffee growth is at its highest.

Temperature ranges between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius are considered optimal for the rapid progression of all metamorphosis stages for this specific thrips species.

Signs of infestation

The first indicator of an infestation is the appearance of characteristic silvery or bronze-colored patches on the undersides of leaves, where larval aggregations are often found.

Affected leaves tend to deform, curl, and gradually turn brown, which can visually mimic sunscald or the early symptoms of a fungal infection.

Tiny black spots, representing thrips excrement, are often visible on the surface of damaged tissues and serve as a crucial diagnostic marker for the presence of the pest.

Inspection of flower clusters may reveal premature wilting and abscission of buds, which directly points to a significant level of pest pressure on the plant.

In neglected cases, severe chlorosis and premature leaf drop are common, leading to branch dieback and a significant decrease in the quality of the harvested coffee beans.

Control measures

Integrated pest management (IPM) for coffee thrips includes agronomic practices such as maintaining optimal moisture levels and implementing proper pruning to enhance ventilation.

Regular monitoring with blue sticky traps is highly recommended, as they effectively attract adults and provide reliable data for tracking population dynamics.

Biological control relies on the presence of natural enemies, including predatory mites and bugs that feed on the eggs and larvae of the thrips under field conditions.

When populations reach economic injury levels, the application of systemic or contact insecticides registered for use on coffee crops may be necessary.
