Potato cyst nematode

This nematode primarily infests solanaceous crops. It causes significant economic damage to potato production worldwide, and it can also infect tomatoes and eggplants, leading to a drastic reduction in tuber yield and quality.

The life cycle is triggered by chemical exudates from host roots in spring. Larvae emerge from cysts when temperatures exceed 10 degrees Celsius. Once they penetrate the roots, they establish a feeding site, causing the plant to starve and become highly susceptible to other soil diseases.

Infested plants show signs of poor development, yellowing of lower leaves, and wilting during dry periods. An examination of the root system often reveals the presence of small, pearl-like cysts attached to the roots, which act as a key diagnostic feature for this parasite.

Management strategies focus on long-term crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce soil populations. Farmers should prioritize resistant potato varieties and implement strict sanitation practices, including cleaning machinery to prevent the spread of cysts to uninfected fields.
