The primary hosts for these nematodes include various citrus species, such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. They feed specifically on the root epidermal cells, creating specialized feeding sites that disrupt the tree's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, leading to overall physiological stress.
The life cycle is unique among plant-parasitic nematodes. Female nematodes undergo a sedentary stage where the anterior part of their body remains embedded in the root cortex, while the posterior part protrudes into the soil. They secrete a gelatinous matrix to protect their eggs, which helps in the survival of the population even during periods of low root activity.
Damage symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, often described as "slow decline." Infected trees exhibit sparse foliage, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), stunted shoot growth, and significantly smaller fruit size. Over time, the root system becomes necrotic and fragile, making the tree susceptible to secondary root-rotting pathogens.
