These pests primarily infest plants by grazing on surface microflora, including fungal spores and molds that settle on leaves and stems. They are most commonly encountered in greenhouses, nursery stock, and dense field plantings where air circulation is restricted. Their activity is closely tied to the accumulation of organic debris, which serves as both food and habitat.

The life cycle of Punctidae is relatively simple, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, populations can multiply rapidly. Females deposit eggs in sheltered areas, such as bark crevices or leaf folds. The nymphs go through multiple molts, growing gradually until reaching the adult stage, at which point they may or may not possess wings.

The damage caused by booklice is largely indirect. By feeding on mold and fungal colonies on plant surfaces, they can disturb the leaf cuticle and create entry points for secondary pathogens. Furthermore, their excrement can cover leaf surfaces, interfering with photosynthesis and aesthetic value. Severe infestations can weaken a plant's defenses, making it more susceptible to environmental stress and diseases.

Effective management focuses on environmental modification to make the habitat inhospitable. Key strategies include:

  • Improving air circulation and ventilation in greenhouses;
  • Reducing irrigation levels to lower relative humidity;
  • Removing plant debris and decaying organic matter;
  • Pruning to reduce canopy density.
Chemical intervention is rarely the primary solution, as addressing the underlying humidity and cleanliness issues is more sustainable.
