The family Carpoglyphidae belongs to the order Acariformes. These are specialized pests primarily found in storage facilities, grain elevators, and food processing plants. Unlike field pests, they lead a stored-product lifestyle, adapting to high-humidity environments and the accumulation of organic debris within indoor agricultural facilities.

The primary commodities damaged by these mites include products of plant origin with high sugar and protein content. Commodities at risk include dried fruits, grain products, medicinal herbs, nuts, and dairy products such as milk powder and certain types of cheese. They frequently infest storage areas when environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature, are not properly regulated.
The biology of these mites is intrinsically linked to the microclimate of the storage facility. Optimal conditions for reproduction range from 20°C to 25°C with a relative humidity exceeding 75%. Their life cycle comprises the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus), and adult stages. The hypopus stage is a crucial survival mechanism that allows the mite to withstand environmental stress, such as desiccation or starvation.
Damage occurs through the mites feeding directly on organic matter, resulting in significant weight loss of the stored goods. Infested products become contaminated with mite excreta, cast skins, and secretions, which often produce a distinct honey-like odor. Furthermore, large mite colonies can cause heating within grain bulks, facilitating secondary mold growth and compromising food safety.
Control measures rely on rigorous environmental management, including strict regulation of humidity and temperature within warehouses. Key practices include:
